Kat Adele lives in a cabin surrounded by legacy forest in the Pacific Northwest — a region that looks peaceful right up until it isn't.
Her fieldwork counting fish on salmon streams puts her, season after season, alongside people she doesn't know well and has to trust with her safety. She's learned to read them fast: who's careful, who's not, who to watch. Most of the time she's right, or close enough.
